How to use the tiling calculator
This calculator estimates the number of tiles required to cover a flat surface. It takes into account the area size, individual tile dimensions, spacing between tiles and an optional wastage allowance.
You can also enter the price per tile to calculate total material costs.
Measure the area
Enter the length and width of the surface you want to tile, in metres. This could be a floor, wall, alcove or any other flat space. The calculator will automatically work out the total area in square metres.
Add tile dimensions
Enter the length and width of a single tile in metres. This should reflect the actual tile size without grout included.
Set grout spacing
Add the grout gap in millimetres. This is the space between each tile once laid. A typical grout width is between two and three millimetres. Including this gives a more realistic tile count and helps avoid underestimating the total required.
Add wastage
Tiles can break during transport, cutting or installation. A standard allowance for wastage is ten to fifteen percent. You can reduce this if your area is simple and has few cuts or edges.
Increase it if the space includes corners, irregular shapes or detailed patterns.
Enter the tile cost
Add the cost per tile if known. The calculator will provide a live total that adjusts as you change other values.
