How to use this pension annuity calculator
Start by selecting either a standard or enhanced annuity. Enter your age, gender, pension pot value, and the annuity rate you’ve been quoted or wish to test. Choose any additional options that apply, such as a guaranteed payment period, inflation protection, or a joint life annuity. If selecting joint life, enter your spouse’s details and the percentage of income to continue for them.
Adjust the inflation rate to reflect your own expectations or leave it at the default value. As you update any details, the calculator will immediately show revised results in the panel on the right (or below on smaller screens).
The figures will update automatically as you make changes.
How this calculator works and the results explained
This calculator estimates the annual income you could receive from a lifetime annuity using the details you provide, including age, gender, pension pot value, annuity rate, and various product options. It accommodates both standard and enhanced annuity scenarios, with the latter applying an uplift to reflect possible increases in income based on health or lifestyle factors.
The calculation is based on the following formula:
Annual income = Pension pot × Annuity rate (%)
(subject to adjustments for selected options)
Adjustments are made to reflect common annuity features:
-
Guaranteed payment periods slightly reduce the annual income to account for the insurer’s commitment to continue payments for a minimum term, even if you die early.
-
Inflation protection reduces the starting income to allow for annual increases, whether fixed or RPI-linked.
-
Joint life annuities apply a reduction based on your spouse’s age and the percentage of income to continue after your death.
The results show a range for estimated annual income, reflecting typical market variation. They also provide an estimate of net income after basic-rate tax, a total projected income over your expected lifetime (using the latest ONS life expectancy data for your age and gender), and projections for the real value of income in 5, 10, and 20 years, taking your chosen inflation rate into account.
Enhanced annuity mode introduces an uplift to the annuity rate within a typical range of 5–30%, depending on eligibility factors. All calculations assume income is taxed above the personal allowance at the basic rate, and do not account for future tax changes or personal allowances.
Actual annuity rates, provider terms, and individual circumstances may differ from the assumptions used. The figures provided are for illustrative purposes only.
Understanding the limitations
This calculator does not provide a personalised annuity quote or guarantee the income you will receive from any provider. It cannot account for the full range of medical, lifestyle, or underwriting factors that may affect eligibility for enhanced rates, nor does it adjust for specialist product features or market innovations beyond the standard options shown.
No allowance is made for partial withdrawals, phased annuity purchase, or changes in inflation beyond the rate you specify. Projections of income and life expectancy are based on national averages and may not reflect your own circumstances.
Any outputs from this calculator are illustrative only and should not be relied upon for financial planning or decision-making. It does not replace regulated advice, and does not cover the full range of annuity options, providers, or investment-linked products available in the market.
For straightforward cases and typical annuity options, this calculator produces estimates that are generally close to what most mainstream providers would offer based on current rates and standard assumptions.
The methodology and figures are suitable for everyday use, but do not account for every individual or provider-specific detail.
For specialist circumstances or if you are eligible for significant rate enhancements, your actual quote could be higher or lower than the results shown.
