Block Paving Calculator

Last Updated: 21st August 2025

Calculate paving block quantity and cost for your project

Whether you’re replacing worn gravel, building a patio or laying a new driveway, this calculator helps you work out how many paving blocks you need and what it may cost.

It takes into account your area size, block dimensions, joint spacing, and any expected wastage.

How to use the block paving calculator

This calculator estimates the number of blocks needed to cover a rectangular area. It factors in the block size, spacing between blocks, and a percentage allowance for cutting and breakage.

You can also include the price per block to get a total material cost.

Enter your area

Measure the length and width of the paved area in metres. Enter these into the calculator. The total area will be calculated automatically.

Enter your block size

Provide the length and width of a single paving block in metres. Use the actual block size, not including the spacing between them.

Add the joint width

Set the joint spacing between each block in millimetres. A typical value is three millimetres. Including this gives a more realistic block count and helps avoid running short near the end of the project.

Enter the cost per block

If you know the unit cost, add the price per block to generate a total materials estimate. This lets you budget before placing an order.

Add a wastage percentage

An allowance for wastage is included by default at five percent. You can increase this if the area includes curves, angles or tight edges that may require extra cuts.

The calculation

The calculator provides the following figures:

  • The number of blocks that fit across the length and width of the area, including joints
  • The total number of blocks required to complete the project
  • Additional blocks based on your chosen wastage allowance
  • An overall cost estimate using the price per block you entered

All results update automatically as you adjust any values. You can experiment with block sizes, joint widths and costs without needing to recalculate anything manually.

Block Details

Enter the dimensions and cost of a single paving block.

? Enter the width of the joint between blocks in millimetres. This is essential for an accurate block count. A common width is 3mm.
? Add a percentage for extra blocks to account for cuts, breakages, and irregular edges. 5-10% is typical.

Why use our block paving calculator?

Because guessing paving blocks by eye usually ends with either too few for the last row or a pile of leftovers you paid for but never needed. This calculator works it out properly, showing you exactly how many blocks fit the space once you factor in joints, cuts, and wastage.

It takes your area size, block dimensions, and joint spacing to give a realistic block count, then adds an allowance for breakages and tricky edges. If you add a unit price, it will also give you a total materials cost, so you know what the project will set you back before placing an order.

The benefit is simple: you can try out different block sizes, joint widths, and costs in seconds, with results updating instantly. No manual calculations, no guesswork, and no nasty surprises halfway through a driveway or patio project.
